About Matthew

Matthew is currently working as a freelance journalist in New York City, where he lives with his wife. He recently graduated as a Dean’s Scholar from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication, where he earned a master’s degree in journalism. He also won the Bryce Nelson Award for Outstanding Graduate Print Journalism Student for his stories on the Los Angeles County welfare system and homeless schoolchildren in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Matthew was born and raised just outside of Toronto, Canada. In 2005 he graduated with honors from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a degree in sociology and political science, and worked and traveled until moving to L.A. in 2006 to attend USC.

Matthew started his journalism career in 2001 when he started writing for his university newspaper, The McGill Daily. He covered everything from campus and citywide protests to International Media Democracy Day. He also wrote for a number of other publications during his years at McGill, ranging from The Dominion to ZNet.

During his time at USC, Matthew reported and interned at Los Angeles CityBeat, where he wrote breaking news pieces and investigative feature stories on topics such as gang violence, labor issues, the environment, city and county politics, academic censorship and others.

He also worked as a general assignment multimedia reporter at The Mississauga News over the summer of 2007, where he was sent out on stories lugging a notepad, still camera and video camera. Upon returning to the newsroom he would – for daily deadline – write up a piece for print, Photoshop a couple of his photos and then write, voice and edit a video piece for the twice-daily webcast. He was also often responsible for shooting and editing the webcast and helping maintain the website.

Matthew was also a reporter, producer and executive producer at Annenberg Radio News, a twice-weekly radio news show based out of USC. His duties included extensive audio production, writing and reporting, determining the editorial content of the broadcasts, editing other reporters’ work, overseeing the newsroom and production, and liaising with various other student-run news programs on campus. He also helped manage and update the website. You can check out some of his radio work in the Radio Features section of the website.

Matthew has also written for a number of other publications – the Huffington Post, The Smoking Section, Pop and Politics, and ArtistDirect have all featured his writing. He has covered, and looks forward to covering in the future, politics, law, business, the economy, immigration, poverty, music, film – a little bit of everything.  You can read some of his writing in the News Articles, Opinion and Music Writing sections.

Aside from journalism, Matthew also loves politics, hip-hop, hockey, The Clash and The Wire, though not necessarily in that order. You can contact him at matthewjmundy@gmail.com.
